A person was struck and killed by a train at about 8:40 p.m. Thursday (July 7) at the Churchill Avenue crossing in Palo Alto, Caltrain has announced.
Southbound train No. 190 hit the person about 1/4 to 1/2 mile north of Churchill, Caltrain spokesperson Christine Dunn stated in a press release.
At about 9:40 p.m. an eyewitness said that a distraught woman was seen walking down Churchill. "Oh my child, my beautiful child," she exclaimed. However, no official information has been released about the identity of the victim.
About the same time, the northbound track was opened for trains traveling at reduced speed, Dunn said.
El Camino Real at Churchill has been blocked off to traffic.
The 175 passengers from train No. 190 were transferred to another southbound train.
Mike Gowan of Mountain View said he was on the train.
"I'll never forget the sound. Ugh. People on the train are very casual about this. It's quite sad," he posted on Twitter.
All passengers boarding at the Palo Alto and California Avenue stations will board on the northbound platform.
This is the ninth fatality on the Caltrain tracks in 2011, Dunn said.
