Gunn High girls’ basketball coach Sarah Stapp, 37, has a new job description — athletic director.

“She is a professional in every sense of the word,” said outgoing AD Chris Horpel, “and I believe she will bring that same professionalism in her new role as AD.”

Stapp has been a physical education teacher at Gunn for the past six year and the girls’ varsity basketball coach for the past five. She has put the Titans into the finals of the Central Coast Section twice in the past three years — setting a school record for wins during a 29-3 campaign three seasons ago.

After four years as AD, Horpel is stepping down. He will continue as one of seven physical education teachers and will enter his 10th year as Gunn’s head wrestling coach.

“Our facilities and coaches have changed a lot in the last four years and I take pride in being part of that,” said Horpel. “I have no doubt that things will continue to go in the right direction under our new AD.”

  1. Kudos to Chris for the terrific job he did as Gunn’s athletic director. As a coach at Gunn, I knew he had a fair view of our program and was very supportive of our goals. Having coached at several schools in the area over the last decade and a half, I thought Chris was an excellent AD, and it seemed to me that he treated all the fall sports fairly.

I look forward to working with Sarah, and to the facilities improvements that are in the works.
