Driver to be charged with homicide in fatal crash

In East Palo Alto, 22-year-old passenger died after driver sped away from officers, police say

A 25-year-old woman who police allege was driving under the influence in East Palo Alto will be arrested on charges of evading police, drunk driving resulting in death, and homicide, following a late-Friday (June 17) crash that took the life of her passenger, Acting Captain Jeff Liu said in a press release Saturday.

East Palo Alto officers saw a vehicle driving recklessly at Pulgas Avenue and Camellia Drive at around 10:30 p.m.

Police said that the officers attempted to stop the vehicle, but the car would not yield and continued to speed in what appeared to be an attempt to evade the police.

A short chase ended when the vehicle crashed at the intersection of Pulgas Avenue and East Bayshore Road, police said.

The driver was ejected from the vehicle and hospitalized with serious, non-life-threatening injuries.

She will be arrested after she is released from the hospital, Liu said.

The passenger, a 22-year-old woman from East Palo Alto, was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

Police are asking anyone with information regarding the incident to call or text message police at 650-409-6792 or email to epa@tipnow.org.

Please slow down, kids. Nothing the cops could stop you for could have worse consequences than killing your friend or family member.

Allow me to raise the bar a bit from the prior entry. How about don't commit crimes or put yourself into circumstances that would cause you to run from the police in the first place. What a concept.

It breaks my heart to see another gone so soon, but decisions were made and there is no changing back time.

If the driver was driving recklessly, couldn't the police chase it in a more subtle way, (maybe coming from a side street, for example) not to cause her to increase her speed - and thus cause the accident?
I am not criticizing the police's work, I think they do a great job, but each case/chase has to be approached with more sensitivity, foreseeing the dangers that a regular chase may pose.
