Two burly men put a new spin on purse snatching Saturday (June 4) when they stole 13 designer purses and ran out of Neiman Marcus at Stanford Shopping Center, according to Palo Alto police.

Security personnel noticed the incongruous juxaposition of large men wearing multiple handbags at 2:56 p.m. and confronted the robbers as they exited the store, police spokesman Sgt. Alex Afanasiev said.

One suspect attempted to pepper spray one of the security guards but missed and successfully pepper sprayed the second security guard. The men took only Diane von Furstenberg handbags valued at $7,565, he said.

Afanasiev said it appeared the men knew exactly what they wanted to steal. The robbers are both described as black, in their 20s, about 6 feet tall and weighing approximately 200 pounds. They wore jeans, black hooded sweatshirts, black shoes and dark-colored baseball caps.

The men fled in a black four-door Chevy Impala with paper license plates, he said.

  1. So where are the surveillance camera recordings? Why aren’t these pictures on-line? Just how safe is it to shop at Stanford these days?

  2. Safe? The folks that want to steal DvF purses rely on the safe reputation to make it so easy to steal. And they have no incentive to physically threaten or harm other shoppers.

  3. They will get theirs… what goes around comes around. Maybe not until they are old, but they will receive their just rewards. The worst by far are those who attack little old ladies in their own homes.

  4. If they missed the first guard with the spray and got the second, what, then, did the first guard do to stop them? Nothing. Great security – quick-thinking. Sounds as though Neiman Marcus could use better security people, or maybe just wait until their karma gets them. Ha!

  5. Stanford Shopping Center is plenty safe and no one should worry about someone harming them.

Just put your valuables out of sight in your vehicle and all will be fine!

It’s definitely one of the safest shopping centers in the area, so enjoy.
