Women leaders address East Palo Alto students

State Attorney General Kamala Harris among leadership group

State Attorney General Kamala Harris was one of nearly 100 women leaders to address middle school girls in East Palo Alto Thursday morning.

About 150 girls in fifth- through eighth-grade were scheduled to attend Thursday's "Current and Future Leaders of Silicon Valley" summit at Cesar Chavez Academy, organizers said.

Harris, the keynote speaker, was joined by leaders in business and the community -- including executives from Facebook, IBM, and NBC Bay Area anchor Jessica Aguirre. Organizers said the goal of the summit was to empower girls by exposing them to role models.

The women were also scheduled to have lunch with the students and visit classrooms to answer questions and converse with the girls. The event, which was sponsored by the Silicon Valley Leadership Group, began at 8:30 a.m. at Cesar Chavez Academy at 2450 Ralmar Ave. in East Palo Alto.
