Man fires gun after hip-hop festival at Stanford

Police set up perimeter following shooting near Roble Field; no one injured

A man who attended a hip-hop festival on the Stanford University campus fired a silver handgun several times as patrons exited the festival Saturday night (May 14), Stanford police said.

Patrons of "Blackfest" were exiting the daylong concert when the man fired multiple shots in the Lagunita parking lot near Roble Field, Stanford police Sgt. Chris Cohendet said.

Witnesses said the man fired the handgun at the ground at about 7:17 p.m. No one was injured, Cohendet said. Police pursued a light-colored car associated with the incident and two people who attempted to escape were detained for questioning but were not arrested, he said.

The shooter has initially been described as a slender black male, 18 to 20 years old with long dreadlocks. He left the scene in an older model gold-colored or burnt orange, two-door car with very large rims and doors that open vertically. The vehicle is believed to be a Lexus or Buick, Cohendet said.

Palo Alto police were called to the scene to help man a campus-wide perimeter in search of the suspect.

I just hope the Officer's pursuit of the perp does not cause every black male with dreads to be a "stop and search" suspect. Hopefully they got more of a description, like: height, complexion and other descriptions. There are many young black males in the area that wear dreads.

Yeah Watcher, maybe the police should stop all the caucasians, Latinos, and Asians before they start stopping people who might actually match the description of the perpetrator. Do you think the guy who did this is walking around holding up a sign that says, Stop me police, I'm the one who did it. It must be hard enough to catch violent, ignorant idiots, without having people pull a preemptive race card. Like most reasonable people, I choose to express outrage and frustration over some low-life that endangered so many people.

My husband and I saw that car driving around earlier that day while we were on campus with our kids. Scary to think that my little ones could have been in danger.

What? " or burnt orange, two-door car with very large rims and doors that open vertically..."??? I hope we get a picture of that rig.

People gotta listen to KRS-ONE from the Boogie Down (or is that too East Coast?):

We gotta put our heads together, and stop the violence
'Cause real bad boys move in silence
When you're in a club, you come to chill out
Not watch someones blood just spill out
That's what these other people want to see
Another race fight endlessly
You know we're being watched, you know we're being seen

Some wish to destroy this scene
called hip-hop
But I won't drop
not I or Scott LaRock
Now here is the message that we bring today
Hip-hop will surely decay
If we as a people don't stand up and say
Stop the violence, stop the violence
