■ Lecture: 'The World Ahead'

John Micklethwait, editor of The Economist, is giving a free talk tomorrow (May 3) from 4:30 to 6 p.m. in Bechtel Conference Center, Encina Hall, 616 Serra St., Stanford University. The topic is "The World Ahead." Micklethwait worked as a banker before joining The Economist in 1987, where his roles have included finance correspondent, media correspondent and New York bureau chief. His books include "The Right Nation: Conservative Power in America" and "God is Back: How the Global Rise of Faith is Changing the World." Go to europe.stanford.edu.

■ Lecture: 'Packing for Mars'

Planetary scientist Pascal Lee and writer Mary Roach, author of "Packing for Mars," will give a free lecture tomorrow (May 3) from 7 to 9 p.m. on the challenges of a human mission to Mars. The talk is in the NASA Conference Center, Building 3 Ballroom, Moffett Field, Mountain View. Lee works with the Mars and SETI institutes. Go to researchpark.arc.nasa.gov.
