■ Dance: Smuin Ballet

San Francisco's Smuin Ballet kicks off five days of performances tonight (Feb. 23) at 8 p.m. The programs include "Bluegrass/Slyde," a work set to bluegrass music by Edgar Meyer and Bela Fleck, and are at the Mountain View Center for the Performing Arts, 500 Castro St. Other performance times are Thursday and Friday at 8 p.m., Saturday at 2 and 8 p.m., and Sunday at 2 p.m. Tickets are $49-$62 for adults and $20 for students. ■ Music: Stanford Jazz Orchestra

Alto saxophonist Charles McPherson, who performed and recorded with the noted composer and bassist Charles Mingus, performs with the Stanford Jazz Orchestra tonight (Feb. 23) at 8 p.m. The concert includes music of Mingus and others, and is in Stanford University's Dinkelspiel Auditorium. Tickets are $10 general, free for Stanford students, and $5 for other students. Call 650-723-2720 or go to events.stanford.edu.
