■ Art: Portola Art Gallery

Palo Alto acrylic painter and retired firefighter Jerome Peters is among the six artists new to the Portola Art Gallery who are exhibiting work there this month. The show is at the Allied Arts Guild, 75 Arbor Road, Menlo Park. The other artists include: Palo Alto figurative sculptor Nancy Stevenson, Palo Alto oil painter Decker Walker, and Menlo Park landscape painter Carolyn Jones. ■ Teen books: Ellen Hopkins

Tomorrow (Feb. 8) at 7 p.m., Ellen Hopkins gives a free author talk on her teen book "Fallout," the third book in the trilogy that began with "Crank" and "Glass." The event is at Kepler's Books, 1010 El Camino Real, Menlo Park. The trilogy deals with addiction and a troubled family. Call 650-324-4321 or go to keplers.com.

The 33rd Annual Palo Alto Weekly Short Story Contest is now accepting entries for Adult, Young Adult (15-17) and Teen (12-14) categories. Send us your short story (2,500 words or less) and entry form by March 29. First, Second and Third Place prizes awarded in each category.
