One in eight California residents was unemployed as of December 2010, state officials said in a report released Friday (Jan. 21).

The state’s unemployment rate increased from 12.4 percent in November to 12.5 percent last month, according to the California Employment Development Department (EDD).

The state’s unemployment rate is well above the nation’s rate, which decreased to 9.4 percent in December, the department said. Marin County had the lowest unemployment rate in the Bay Area at 7.9 percent, while Solano County had the highest at 12.1 percent.

San Francisco’s jobless rate was 9.2 percent, while Alameda and Santa Clara counties were at 10.8 and 10.4 percent, respectively. The EDD estimated that the number of Californians holding jobs in December 2010 was 15,946,000, which was a decrease from November 2010 but an increase of 78,000 from the year before.

The unemployment rate is based on a federal survey of 5,500 California households and does not include agricultural jobs, which are handled by another department.

  1. The relentless whining and stalling from the Tea Partiers is holding back the country’s recovery from the Bush years. Get with the program! You’re hurting everyone, not just Obama.

  2. Let’s see the lowest County unemployment number was 7.9% and the highest was 12.1 and the average for the State was 12.4%. This type of careful analysis maybe why we have such high unemployment.

  3. John: Ah, the joys of data analysis. The 7.9% and 12.1% numbers are stated to be the lowest and highest for the Bay Area. Both are lower than the state average of 12.4%.

  4. “The 7.9% and 12.1% numbers are stated to be the lowest and highest for the Bay Area. Both are lower than the state average of 12.4%.”

Which means that many CA counties have a higher unemployment rate than 12.4%.

There will be no federal bailout, period. However, there could be a bankruptsy solution, if the laws are changed. I am not supporting this approach, becasue making real cuts is the real answer, but it might be the only way, politically, to achieve such cuts.

  5. I too blame the Tea Partiers for talking down the economy. Consumers would be spending again if it wasn’t for all this doom-and-gloom from Limbaugh and Fox News! Bush is causing this recession and Obama has done everything imaginable to pull us out of it!!!!! THINGS ARE FINALLY STARTING TO LOOK BETTER. But the right-wing media will continue to focus on these unemployment rates. Listen how many times they say “persistent unemployment”! It’s time for media reform!

  6. If the California legislature doesn’t face reality, and make the necessary adjustments to the state’s budget, then the IOUs will be flowing out of Sacramento shortly.

  7. More state budget cuts are inevitable given the 2/3 majority needed for new taxes (prop 13).
These budget cuts will lead to more layoffs of state and local govt workers, which will drive CA unemployment even higher.
The state’s structural budget deficit, and the refusal of the minority in the legislature to consider raising revenues is driving CA unemployment.

  8. > These budget cuts will lead to more layoffs of state and local
    > govt workers, which will drive CA unemployment even higher.

Maybe .. but aren’t government workers smarter and better educated than the people in the private sector? So .. that means that they will be able to find jobs much more quickly than laid off private sector workers .. and the employment rates won’t go up for very long.

  9. And Jerry Brown’s “budget boss” is a 35 year old with a degree in feminist studies and political science! This is the kind of public policy “thinking’ that is driving all our businesses and business leaders out of California.

On the other hand, I suppose with Krugman as an example of “fine thinking” by economists, she can’t do any worse! Maybe she will show a little common sense.

Certainly has to be better sense than the poster above who believes that GOVERNMENT jobs are paid somehow from money grown on trees..not by private sector producing stuff that has value, then paying taxes; or the one who thinks raising taxes is raising “revenue”. These people haven’t a clue about economics, and are great examples of what drives businesses and jobs away.

Bottom line: There are no taxes to take if there are no producers left. We have 12% of the nation’s population..but 33% of the nation’s welfare recipients. Don’t you wish that we had 33% of the nation’s businesses instead? Better start thinking about how to attract BUSINESSES instead of welfare takers.

  10. Just read the rest of the comments. I love the thoughtful analysis that it is the fault of the Tea Partiers and talk radio that we aren’t recovering economically because we “talk it down”.

Yup..all those years of every media outlet and every leftist, and leftist economists like Krugman being “surprised” at month after month, year after year of GDP, employment, and wealth growth even though Bush did everything wrong..THAT was ok, but now that critics have actual facts behind their position, like double unemployment, half GDP, 30% decrease in venture capital and the lowest rate of new business ( when over 90% of new jobs come) starts in 30 years..well, NOW we should be optimists! We should simply BELIEVE!!

    geez

thankfully, the truth is setting America free. Like Samuel Clemens aka Mark Twain said, a lie makes it around the world before the truth has his pants on, but I believe that as truth marches forward, more and more people are pushing their veils aside.

Until 20 years from now, when it will start all over again with a new generation of naive and ignorant.

    ha ha ha
