■ Author: Izzeldin Abuelaish

Tonight (Jan. 14) at 7 p.m., the Harvard-trained Palestinian doctor Izzeldin Abuelaish gives a free talk about his book "I Shall Not Hate: A Gaza Doctor's Journey on the Road to Peace and Human Dignity." The event is at Books Inc., 301 Castro St., Mountain View. Abuelaish, who lost his daughters to the violence in the region, treats both Israelis and Palestinians and has been praised for his work toward reconciliation. ■ Film: 'Stefan Luchian'

As part of the Stanford Romanian Film Series, the 1981 film "Stefan Luchian" -- about an acclaimed Romanian painter who had paralysis for part of his life -- will be shown at 7 p.m. tonight (Jan. 14). The free screening is at Language Corner, Building 260 (Pigott Hall), Room 113, Stanford University. Directed by Nicolae Margineanu, the 93-minute drama will be shown with English subtitles.
