East Coast snowstorms ground Bay Area flights

Number of cancellations, delays reported at San Francisco International Airport

Snowstorms on the East Coast have caused a number of flight cancellations at Bay Area airports this morning, airport officials said.

At San Francisco International Airport, 25 arriving flights and eight departures have been canceled due to the stormy weather that has brought air traffic to a standstill at airports in Boston, New York and Newark, SFO Duty Manager Bob Rotiski said.

United Airlines, American Airlines, Continental Airlines and Virgin America are among the affected carriers. Rotiski said some East Coast airports that have been shut down are hoping to reopen at 1 p.m., which would allow planes scheduled to depart this afternoon to take off from SFO.

Two JetBlue Airways flights scheduled to depart for New York from Oakland International Airport this morning have been canceled, airport spokeswoman Rosemary Barnes said. There were no East Coast-bound flights scheduled to take off this morning from Mineta San Jose International Airport, though two red-eye flights bound for Boston and New York were canceled Sunday night, San Jose airport spokesman David Vossbrink said.

Air passengers traveling out of the Bay Area today should check with their airlines before leaving for the airport.
