Bowl game season gets busy this week before Stanford kicks off in Orange Bowl on Jan. 3


Football fans will get their share of the postseason this week, long before Stanford takes on Virginia Tech in the Orange Bowl in Miami on Jan. 3. Before the Cardinal kicks off its hopes for a 12-1 season, there will be 20 bowl games.

The week gets under way on Monday with Georgia Tech (6-6) taking on Air Force (9-4) in the Independence Bowl in Shreveport, La. Kickoff is 2 p.m. on ESPN2). Two more games will be played Tuesday with North Carolina State (9-4) taking on West Virginia (9-3) in the Champs Sports Bowl in Orlando, Fla. (3:30 p.m., ESPN) before Missouri (10-2) and Iowa (7-5) meet in the Insight Bowl in Tempe, Ariz. (7 p.m., ESPN).

Three more games will be held Wednesday, four will be played on Thursday and four more are on tap for New Year's Eve. Six games are spread out from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on New Year's Day.

Stanford (11-1) and Virginia Tech (11-2) will grab center stage on Monday, Jan. 3 at 5:30 p.m. (ESPN).

The bowl season, which features 35 games spread over 24 days, mercifully will end on Jan. 10 with the BCS championship game pitting No. 1 Auburn (13-0) against No. 2 Oregon (12-0).


Wednesday -- Military Bowl: East Carolina (6-6) vs. Maryland (8-4), 11:30 a.m. (ESPN); Texas Bowl: Baylor (7-5) VS. Illinois (6-6), 3 p.m. (ESPN); Alamo Bowl: Arizona (7-5) vs. Oklahoma State (10-2), 6:15 p.m. (ESPN)

Thursday -- Armed Forces Bowl: SMU (7-6) vs. Army ()6-6), 9 a.m. (ESPN); Pinstripe Bowl: Syracuse (7-5) vs. Kansas State (7-5), 12:30 p.m. (ESPN); Music City Bowl: North Carolina (7-5) vs. Tennessee (6-6), 3:40 p.m. (ESPN); Holiday Bowl: Nebraska (10-3) vs. Washington (6-6), 7 p.m. (ESPN)

Friday -- Meineke Bowl: Clemson (6-6) vs. South Florida (7-5), 9 a.m. (ESPN); Sun Bowl: Notre Dame (7-5) vs. Miami (7-5), 11 a.m. (CBS 5); Liberty Bowl: Georgia (6-6) vs. Univ-Central Florida (10-3), 12:30 p.m. (ESPN); Chick-fil-A Bowl: South Carolina (9-4) vs. Florida State (9-4), 4:30 p.m. (ESPN)

Saturday, Jan. 8 -- BBVA Compass Bowl: Pittsburgh (7-5) vs. Kentucky (6-6), 9 a.m. (ESPN)

Sunday, Jan. 9 -- Fight Hunger Bowl: Boston College (7-5) vs. Nevada (12-1), 6 p.m. (ESPN)

Monday, Jan. 10 -- BCS title game: Auburn (13-0) vs. Oregon (12-0), 5:30 p.m. (ESPN)

Are any of these bowl games going to be on broadcast TV or only on ESPN?

All the games show the TV coverage. It's not like in the old days when ABC, NBC, and CBS carried all the major bowls on New Year's Day. Now it's pretty much all ESPN.
