Child, teen happiness is topic in essay contest

Kids and teens asked to submit entries in library-sponsored writing contest

Hey kids, what makes you happy?

Winning essays on that topic will earn the authors $25 gift certificates to Books Inc. and more in the Palo Alto Library's third annual Writing Contest.

Essays of no more than 500 words will be accepted in two age categories: kids (grades 2 to 5) and teens (grades 6 to 12).

The due date is Sunday, Jan. 10, by 9 p.m.

Essays will be judged on "concept and creativity" according to a library press release.

Winners will be announced in receptions to which all writers are invited. The "kids" reception will be Jan. 26 at 3:30 p.m. at the Children's Library. The "teen" reception is set for Feb. 7 at 4:15 p.m. at the Main Library.

Contest entries may be submitted at any library branch, or e-mailed to librarychildrensservices@cityofpaloalto.org or libraryteens@cityofpaloalto.org.

First-place winners will earn Books Inc. gift certificates. Additionally, children will receive a California Pizza Kitchen gift certificate good for one pizza, drink and dessert, and teens will get a Culture Organic Frozen Yogurt gift certificate.

Sponsors of the contest are Friends of the Palo Alto Library, Whole Foods, California Pizza Kitchen and Culture Organic Frozen Yogurt. For more information, visit the library website or call 650-329-2436.
