■ Exhibit: 'Cabinet of Curiosities'

Tomorrow (Dec. 3), Palo Alto's Museum of American Heritage opens a new exhibit called "Cabinet of Curiosities," inspired by the private museums of past years in which rich folk displayed curiosities they had found in many nations. The free show, which will include such local collectors' items as an ancient cuneiform tablet and an 18th-century slide rule, runs through May 1 at the museum at 351 Homer Ave. The museum is open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday through Sunday. Call 650-321-1004 or go to moah.org.

■ Music: Takacs Quartet

Quartets by Bartok and Schubert -- and a work written by the American composer Daniel Kellogg as a companion to Schubert -- are on the program when the Takacs Quartet performs tomorrow (Dec. 3). The Stanford Lively Arts-presented concert is at 8 p.m. in Stanford's Dinkelspiel Auditorium. Tickets are $48/$56 general and $10 for Stanford students, with discounts available for groups, youth and other students. Call 650-725-ARTS or go to livelyarts.stanford.edu.
