Gunn grad named Division III national swimmer of week

University of Chicago junior Tara Levens from Gunn High has been named the National Collegiate Swimmer of the Week for NCAA Division III.

Levens won six events at this past weekend's Phoenix Fall Classic at the Myers-McLoraine Pool. Leading off the 400-yard medley relay, she clocked a 57.10 backstroke split, which was good for an NCAA "A" cut as well as a school and pool record.

Levens, who earlier in the week was cited as the University Athletic Association Athlete of the Week, also finished second in the 200-yard backstroke (2:07.26, NCAA "B" cut), first in the 100-yard butterfly (58.61), and first in the 50-yard freestyle (24.81).

Menlo School graduate Ben Hohl of UCLA capped his senior season with 42 goals as the Bruins finished fourth last weekend in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation tournament at Stanford. UCLA (19-6) won its opener, 7-5 over Pacific, but then dropped matches to USC and Cal.

Gunn High grad Matt Johnson of UC Irvine helped his team finish fifth in the MPSF tournament following a 16-12 win over UC Santa Barbara on Sunday at Stanford. Earlier, Johnson had nine saves while his brother, Brandon (another Gunn grad), recorded a hat trick in a 13-7 triumph over Pepperdine as the Anteaters (18-8) took two of three matches at Avery Aquatic Center.
