Tennis, water polo first-round winners facing quick elimination in CCS tournaments

The opening rounds of Central Coast Section playoff action always should be savored, because the postseason can be very short. That's the likely scenario for three girls' tennis teams and two boys' water polo teams that posted victories on Tuesday.

Second-round action for all five could mark the end of their respective seasons.

In girls' tennis, Menlo-Atherton (14-5) has to play No. 6 St. Ignatius (15-5) on Wednedsday in Golden Gate Park, while Palo Alto (12-7) visits No. 3 Menlo School (17-5) and Sacred Heart Prep (16-6) takes on host Harker (12-6). Only huge upsets will allow the visiting teams to move on to Friday's quarterfinals.

Menlo-Atherton posted a 7-0 first-round win over visiting Scotts Valley; Palo Alto blanked Los Gatos, 7-0, and Sacred Heart Prep took a 4-2 decision from Evergreen Valley in a match that was halted by darkness.

In boys' Division I water polo, No. 8 Gunn (13-11) advanced to the quarterfinals on Saturday against No. 1 St. Francis (17-6) while No. 7 Palo Alto will face No. 2 Bellarmine (14-11) in the next round. Neither the Titans nor the Vikings are favored to advance despite impressive first-round wins.

Gunn got 10 goals from senior Ben Hendricks in a 16-11 win over Salinas at Monta Vista High while Palo Alto sophomore Bret Pinsker scored five goals and senior Ken Wattana added four in a 17-8 dunking of visiting Wilcox, a team from the SCVAL El Camino Division. Paly converted five of eight 6-on-5 situations and made both of its 5-meter penalty shots.
