Scores of Bay Area restaurants — including six in Palo Alto, 10 in Menlo Park and others in neighboring communities — will donate 10 percent of Tuesday (Nov. 9) daily proceeds to the Meals on Wheels senior-nutrition program .

The Bay Area’s first annual “Dine Out Now for Meals on Wheels” will benefit senior-nutrition programs in seven Bay Area counties.

The nonprofit Meals on Wheels program provides nearly 3 million meals to more than 8,500 senior citizens throughout the Bay Area. In Santa Clara County, officials estimate more than 1,400 seniors were served more than 609,000 meals in the 2009-10 fiscal year.

The program provides hot meals to homebound elders who have no other means of getting food. Counties across the state that normally step in to help the poorest seniors face tighter budgets are finding it more difficult to provide food.
