Literary fixture Joyce Carol Oates gives a free talk tonight (Sept. 20) at 7:30 p.m. in Stanford University's Cubberley Auditorium in the school of education. She has written 56 novels and many plays, essays, volumes of poetry, short-story collections and book reviews. Pre-registration is not required for the event, which is presented by the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education and Stanford Continuing Studies. ■ Art: 'Orphaned Elephants of Tsavo'

Marsha Heimbecker shows her oil paintings inspired by an African wildlife trust through Sept. 30 at the Portola Art Gallery. The gallery is at the Allied Arts Guild, 75 Arbor Road, Menlo Park.
