No. 2-ranked Stanford women open home season

After opening the season with an East Coast road trip against four 2009 NCAA Tournament teams, including two in the Top 10, the Stanford women's soccer team (2-0-2) plays its home opener Friday against Georgia (4-1) to highlight opening-night play in the Stanford Nike Invitational.

The four-team tournament features three ranked teams -- No. 2 Stanford, No. 9 Santa Clara, and No. 23 Georgia -- as well as Pacific. The matches will be part of tripleheaders involving the Stanford men's team, Friday and Sunday at Laird Q. Cagan Stadium.

The Stanford women are 19-9-2 in the 15 years of the Stanford Nike Invitational. However, since 2000, the Cardinal has gone 16-3-1. Last year, Stanford beat Colorado, 4-0, and Wisconsin, 6-0.

The tournament is decided by best overall record, with three points for a win and one for a draw. If teams are tied for best record, the tiebreakers are head-to-head, goal differential, and goals scored, in that order.

The following is the complete schedule for soccer this weekend:

2 p.m. -- Stanford men vs. UNLV (nonconference)

4:30 p.m. -- Santa Clara women vs. Pacific (Stanford Nike Invitational)

7 p.m. -- Stanford women vs. Georgia (Stanford Nike Invitational)

(One ticket is good for all three games)

11 a.m. -- Santa Clara women vs. Georgia (Stanford Nike Invitational)

2 p.m. -- Stanford women vs. Pacific (Stanford Nike Invitational)

6 p.m. -- Stanford men vs. Sacramento State (nonconference)

(The stadium will be cleared after the Stanford women's match, and a separate ticket must be purchased for the Stanford men's match.)
