■ Dance: Belly-dancing lessons

Tonight (Sept. 7) at 6 p.m., teachers Marie Soderlund and Sabiba will hold free belly-dancing lessons, followed by open social dancing, outdoors on Courthouse Square, 2200 Broadway, Redwood City. The city-hosted downtown dancing events run weekly through Sept. 21. For details, go to redwoodcity.org.

■ Books: Young Adult Book Club

Kepler's Books tonight (Sept. 7) at 5:30 p.m. hosts its Young Adult Book Club's discussion of "The Alchemyst" by Michael Scott. The fantasy novel is about a legendary figure who makes an elixir of life. Book-club attendees are asked to contribute $2 for pizza and drinks, and to RSVP by emailing megan@keplers.com. The 33rd Annual Palo Alto Weekly Short Story Contest is now accepting entries for Adult, Young Adult (15-17) and Teen (12-14) categories. Send us your short story (2,500 words or less) and entry form by March 29. First, Second and Third Place prizes awarded in each category.
