■ Theater: 'The Light in the Piazza'

Presented by TheatreWorks, the Broadway musical "The Light in the Piazza" has an 8 p.m. preview performance tonight (Aug. 25) at the Mountain View Center for the Performing Arts, 500 Castro St. The bittersweet tale with a strings-filled score follows a vulnerable American woman who falls for a young Florentine man in 1953 Tuscany. After later previews on Aug. 26 and 27, the show runs through Sept. 19, Tuesday through Sunday. Tickets are $22-$70. Call 650-903-6568 or go to theatreworks.org.

At 7 p.m. tonight (Aug. 25), Howard Norman gives a free author talk on his book "What Is Left the Daughter." The event is at Kepler's Books, 1010 El Camino Real, Menlo Park.
