Police hunt for armed men at Menlo Park Safeway

Supermarket evacuated after woman claims seeing men with guns

Employees at a Menlo Park Safeway store had a scare early Monday morning (Aug. 16) when police evacuated the store searching for armed men.

A woman called police sometime around 1 a.m. after she believed she saw two people carrying guns enter the store on Sharon Park Drive, police said. Police arrived within minutes and surrounded the building, then evacuated the store.

An extensive search failed to turn up any gunmen, and police said the woman was simply mistaken in what she saw. Police, however, still encourage residents who think they are witnessing a crime in progress to contact them immediately.

The Palo Alto Police Department and the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office assisted in the response.

I'm in agreement with Open Carry above. I think I would do the same if I saw a couple of guys taking guns into a store, regardless of the time of day.

of course there's surveilaance video. just because YOU don't know about it, or can't view it, doesn't mean a thing. [Portion removed by Palo Alto Online staff.]

"boozed lady" and "mr ironic", why can't this lady be out at 1:00 am? Maybe she works a late shift and does her shopping when she can. Get real. "open carry" Just fooling around? That's a good way to get shot. Another reason to outlaw open carry.

If you've ever had occasion to go to the Safeways after hours you'll find there are often quite a few people there shopping in the middle of the night. Not for liquor either.

You get the added bonus of seeing why lots of the food expires before its date because the employees unbox stuff in the aisles and then take off for a hour long smoke break while it defrosts and melts.

You realize how stuff gets broken and the boxes and cans get dented and slashed too when you witness the underwhelming care they take then they stock the shelves by throwing boxes halfway down the aisles and kicking them around.

It's a real hoot. Maybe the people with the guns where managers trying to get their employees to work and do a good job?
