Rubin goes the distance at Alpine Hills event

 

The tennis action in the Alpine Hills Junior Classic Open at the Alpine Hills Tennis and Swim Club is heating up entering the final two days of the tournament.

In the boys' 16 division, Rainer Rubin, of Stanford, needed three sets to beat Andrew Low, 6-3, 4-6, 6-1, Tuesday to set up a quarterfinal match with fourth-seeded Richie Sarwal of Portola Valley on Wednesday.

Atherton's Michael Hoffman, the top seed, will also be in action as well as No. 2 Zeke Brown, also of Atherton.

Los Altos Hills' Connor Stearns advanced in the boys' 16 division with a 6-4, 6-4 decision over Menlo Park's Matt Lemieux.

In the girls' 16 division, Palo Alto's Paulette Wolak completed the quarterfinal round, beating Kaede Ishikawa, 6-2, 6-1. She joins Menlo Park's Erin Laporte, who received a bye.

Five seeded players remain in the crowded boys' 14 field. Palo Alto's Austin Leung, the sixth seed, advanced into the quarterfinals when Ovidiu Fritsch retired with an injury. Leung was leading 6-3, 1-0, at the time.

Fifth-seeded Matt Liston, of Menlo Park, outlasted Jason Chu, 7-5, 6-4, to reach the quarterfinals. He'll meet No. 4 seed Cameron Kirkpatrick, of Menlo Park, who beat Palo Alto's Chasen Chacon, 6-1, 6-0.

Palo Alto's Aashli Budhiraja, the No. 2 seed, reached the semifinals of the girls' 14 bracket with a 7-5, 6-1 victory over Samantha Solomon.

In boys' 12 action, No. 2 seed Jake Chua-Gozani of Stanford downed Portola Valley's Mikel Hylkema, 6-1, 6-0; Palo Alto's Shiv Matta, the fourth seed, beat Palo Alto's William Borie, 7-6 (2), 6-0; Portola Valley's Michael Quezada advanced with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Sam Korman; and Portola Valley's Ryan Quinn got the best of Daniel Jun, 6-4, 6-3.
