Local lacrosse players helping NorCal boys' team in Maryland

A handful of local players are keeping busy this week at the adidas National Lacrosse Classic in Maryland while representing Northern California in the boys' tournament being held at the Maryland Soccerplex in Boyds, Md.

The NorCal squad was 1-1 following an 11-10 loss to Florida on Wednesday. Palo Alto residents Kris Hoglund and Clayton Jones scored goals for NorCal, which opened the tourney with a 6-4 triumph over Ohio. Palo Alto's Kevin Proceviat tallied a goal for NorCal.

Proceviat will be a senior this fall at Palo Alto High while Hoglund will be a junior. Also playing for NorCal is John Brunett and Cooper Levitan of Paly, Marcus Cassidy from Gunn, Palo Alto resident Clayton Jones, Alex Mills of Atherton and Edward Meyer of Stanford.

Proceviat, Hoglund, Brunett and Levitan helped the Vikings win the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League playoff championship this past season in only the first season of existence for the team.

The team played New England in their third game and gave the number one seed in the tournament their best game losing 6-8. It was 6-7 with less than two minutes left - very exciting and gave NE parents a fright. In Norcal's final game they beat Long Island 5-4, scoring the winning goal in the final 20 seconds. The win was inpressive since Norcal knew they could not make the playoffs while Long Island could with a win.

The loss to Florida ended up hurting the team as both finished 2-2 in pool play with Florida going to the play-offs because of their head to head win over Norcal. In the Florida game Norcal jumped out to a 4-0 lead and looked like one of the strongest teams. Florida didn't give in and benefited from a couple close calls. Norcal was a head of all of their games at he end of the first quarter , lead three at half and were tied with NE 2-2 at half.

With a couple of breaks Norcal could easily have finished 4-0. And although they didn't make the playoffs played the best ever of any Norcal team in the Adidas All American tournament and proved that NorCal can hang with the best players in North America.

Note: Connor Patrick of Woodside is also on the team.
