Stanford pitcher earns weekly honor in the NECBL

Stanford righthander Mark Appel of the Newport Gulls was named the New England Collegiate Baseball League's co-Pitcher of the Week, the second Cardinal player to be honored by the summer league.

Appel no-hit Keene this past week over 5 2/3 innings, finishing with seven shutout innings in a 6-0 win on June 30. Appel (3-0) picked up his third win of the season, yielding just two hits. He struck out two and walked two others.

Overall this summer, Appel is 3-0 over 17.0 innings of work with a 2.12 ERA. Opponents are batting .246 against him. For Stanford this past spring he was 2-1 with a 5.94 ERA in a team-high 24 appearances.

Appel, who just finished up his freshman year, is the second Cardinal in two weeks to be honored by the NECBL. Classmate Kenny Diekroeger, who leads the NECBL in batting (.394), was the league's player of the week last week.
