If nothing else, Goetz Brothers does have something going for it heading into the championship game of the Palo Alto Babe Ruth 15U City Tournament -- revenge.
It was only two nights ago that Goetz Brothers was walloped by B&B Builders, 14-4, in a semifinal game shortened to six innings due to the 10-run mercy rule. Now, Goetz Brothers has a chance to turn that result around.
Thanks to a 9-5 victory over top-seeded Alhouse Realty in the consolation finals on Tuesday night, Goetz Brothers will take on B&B Builders in the title contest Wednesday (5:30 p.m.) at Baylands Athletic Center.
Goetz Brothers not only has to win that game, but a second (challenge) contest in order to steal the title away from B&B.
Goetz Brothers earned the right to at least try for the tough sweep by scoring all the runs it needed in the top of the first to grab a 7-0 lead.
Michael Fraser had a two-run double for a 5-0 lead and Lawson Joos provided the eventual game-winning hit when he singled down the third-base line to score Fraser. After loading the bases, Goetz scored again when Dan Tachna-Fram singled home Joos.
Alhouse rebounded quickly with a run in the first and three more in the second, highlighted by a two-run single by Brady Coggins.
Goetz added to its lead in the fourth when Mikey Diekroeger led off with an infield single, moved to third on an infield error and scored on a double-play groundout. In the sixth, Tachna-Fram reached base on a fielder's choice and eventually scored on a single by Ben Sampson.
The championship game will match the No. 3 and 4 seeds.
