New Year's Eve options: from reverence to revelry

Ways to toast to the new decade are plentiful in Palo Alto, Mountain View

New Year's Eve celebrants will have a variety of options to welcome 2010 this Thursday as restaurants, clubs and religious organizations in the Palo Alto area open their doors to revelers.

Following an annual party for senior citizens in Palo Alto during the day, toasts to the new decade will continue under the full moon Thursday evening. Here are some of the offerings:

Palo Alto and East Palo Alto

The City of Palo Alto's recreation division hosts the The New Year's Eve Day Bash for area seniors Thursday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Cubberley Community Center auditorium, 4000 Middlefield Road, Palo Alto. The 10th Street Band will play and a buffet lunch will be served. Pre-sale tickets are $13 and can be purchased at Lucie Stern Community Center, Cubberley Community Center, Senior Friendship Day Center, Avenidas Senior Center and the Oshman Family Jewish Community Center. Organist James Welch will pipe in the New Year with a concert of the music of J.S. Bach at 8 p.m. at St. Mark's Episcopal Church, 600 Colorado Ave., Palo Alto. Selections include the Fantaisie in G, the Sonata in E-flat Major, Prelude & Fugue in E minor, the Schuebler Chorales and a pedal exercise. $10 donation at the door. Information: 650-856-9700 or

Singles will gather at two Palo Alto parties. The group Your Asian Connection will offer food, drinks, music and singles at its New Year's dance party at Illusions Dining & Entertainment (Grand Ballroom), 260 S California Ave., Palo Alto. 8 p.m.-1 a.m. $30-$60. Information: 408-557-8885. The Society of Single Professionals New Year's Eve Party for adults of all ages will be held at the Sheraton Hotel, 625 El Camino Real, Palo Alto. Vintage music from the early 1900s to the 1930s prevails when Paul Price's Society Orchestra performs at a New Year's Eve Ball from 8:30 p.m. to 12:15 a.m. The party is a non-alcohol event for people of all ages and will be held at the Masonic Center Ballroom at 461 Florence St. in downtown Palo Alto. $25 per person. A spiritual New Year's Eve Service at Ananda will include a talk by Asha Praver, chanting, meditation, affirmation and a fire ceremony. Meditation, 7:30-9:30 p.m.; worship service, 10 p.m. - midnight. Free. Information: 650-323-3363. 2171 El Camino Real, Palo Alto.

Offering its guests a New Year's Eve, Bollywood Style, Junnoon in downtown Palo Alto will offer two seatings of a five-course prix fixe dinner with complimentary glass of champagne at 5:30 p.m. and 8 p.m. $60 for 5:30 p.m. seating; $75 for 8 p.m. 150 University Ave. Information: 650-329-9644.

A New Year's Eve Celebration at the Four Seasons Hotel's Quattro Restaurant and Bar will start at 8 p.m. with a champagne reception at the bar and festive appetizers. Bella Luna Ristoranti will feature American jazz standards performed by Mike Bastian on drums/vocals at its downtown Palo Alto restaurant. 8:30 p.m. -12:30 a.m., 233 University Ave. Information: 650-322-1847.

Mountain View

A Watch Night worship service at Abundant Life Christian Fellowship will kick off the New Year in Mountain View. The service includes extended periods of worship, music and testimonies about God in 2009. 10:30 p.m. until the New Year. Free. 2440 Leghorn St., Mountain View. Information: 650-210-9340.

At Stephen's Green in Mountain View, revelers can take part in a costume party, with a top prize of $500 for the best outfit. Party includes DJ Cesar and complimentary party favors. New Year's Eve dinner menu will be served from 7 -10 p.m. with $10 entrees. Cover charge is $10 from 10 p.m. onwards. 223 Castro St., Mountain View. Information: 650-964-9151.

The New Year's Eve Dinner Party at Sakoon, an Indian restaurant in Mountain View, will feature a five-course prix fixe menu, with live DJ after 7 p.m. Cost is $35/person from 5-6:30 p.m.; $50/person from 7-10:30 p.m. $30 wine pairing. 357 Castro Street. Information: 650-965-2000.

Zen Lounge's 'NYE Ball' includes a balloon drop, a flair bartending show, a champagne toast, complimentary chocolate fondue and party favors.
