Mountain View man arrested for hate crime

A 26-year-old Mountain View man was arrested Wednesday evening for a hate crime, police say, after he allegedly yelled a racial slur at an African-American couple and proceeded to throw a beer container and punches at the male victim.

Police responded to a 911 call about a fight at the 1900 block of California Street at 7:22 p.m. The two victims, a 20-year-old man and a 20-year-old woman, were standing outside of an apartment complex when suspect Humberto Pineda, a resident of the apartment complex, drove up in a purple van.

Police say that Pineda jumped out of the van, smashed a beer bottle on the ground and shouted a racial slur at the couple, both of whom ran to a friend's door in the complex. Pineda allegedly threw a beer can at the male victim and missed. Police say Pineda punched the male victim the face, at which point the male victim fought back in defense. Neighbors came out to break up the fight and the victim's girlfriend called 911.

Though police say Pineda fled the scene, a patrolling officer saw him pull his van back into the parking lot later that evening at 9:49 p.m. Pineda was approached by the officer and appeared to be under the influence of alcohol and had a suspended driver's license, police say. The victims identified him as the suspect and he was arrested without incident.

Pineda was charged with a hate crime, assault with a deadly weapon, battery, driving while under the influence, driving on a suspended driver's license and violating his probation terms for a previous incident of driving under the influence. He was booked into the Santa Clara County Main Jail.

Lock him up, throw away the key. Let him deal with his anger in an environment prepared to deal with it - prison.

hate crimes = he hated himself and took it out on other people. glad he's in jail and facing these charges because now he can think about his actions and hopefully choose to change his life.

The "lock him up & throw away the key" comments don't make sense because they're not in touch w/reality. Cops always overcharge a case & the prosecutors figure out what'll hold water & what won't. This loser is your garden variety duck fup that is common. That means that the overcrowded prisons have too many like him, so they aren't going to throw away the key, most likely.

You would be surprised at the rate of hate crimes since the Obama inauguration. I would never want to change my skin color, but we do get targeted daily just for it.

When one black person does something wrong, we all get blamed for it! But when the crime is committed by someone white, you can hear a pin drop. This case does not count of course, but look how empty the comments are. Touchy subject.

This seems more like an assult with a few bad words thrown in than a hate crime. Was Humberto just methed up and wanted to fight the first person availiable, or was his intent to find a black person to assult?

This has been stated ad nauseum, but the race card is pulled way too often nowadays, especially post Obama election. Sometimes pulling this card makes you look really stupid, i.e. Jimmy Carter, so one must be careful matching incidents to race.

Careful, Rob, ere you go down the history hole. The Winston Smiths will tolerate no question of the hate crime concept. I am about ready to fold my tent rather than validate this "forum" with my highly censored presence. A pity Jay lacks the integrity to openly 86 me.

After I thought about it, this doesn't sound like a hate crime, just a racist shouting his opinion. Same thing I see on these forums, at least he was honest and hiding behind a computer or a sheet over his face as most do. Since it is no longer popular to be outwardly racist, since "people" got tired of being hung from trees not too long ago, most racists are upset that their group of proud racists has become smaller! I believe the only people with rights to comment on it are people that have been affected (lynch victims/family) who have and never will compensated. If you are not one of those victims, then sit back, keep hiding and enjoy the fruits of their ancestors labor! Because you will continue to hear the "race card" until you and your friends, the KKK take care of business.

Cynthia, you really sound like you are someone trying to stir the pot.

But, in case you are sincere, since our nation made history by voting in the first half-black, half-white male POTUS, you claim that "hate crimes" have gone up...

Can you please give any data to support this?

As for victims..I will support victims compensation for blacks as soon as all descendants of the whites who were killed and beaten for being on the side of freedom in the Civil War, and those whites killed and beaten in the 60s for being on the side of Civil Rights,.. are also compensated. If you add up the numbers, I suspect you will be surprised at the disparity of deaths on the side of freedom there are for whites, versus other colors.

So, please, let the whole d*&n race card rest. I heard a great ad the other day "your race card has been denied due to overuse". I think America is done with it.

Ok, I will wait for the data about "hate crimes" being on the marked rise since the election of Obama...And if they ARE on the rise now, why weren't they on a marked rise during Condi Rice's tenure, or after Clarence Thomas was put in place? Just an interesting thought...
