Sacred Heart Prep grad Zizi Clark recorded water polo’s version of a double-double while the NorCal girls’ water polo club team were in Hawaii for the Hawaiian Invitational.

Clark won a Koa Bowl as a player for the Open Women division champs, and then came back to win a Koa Bowl as a coach of the of the Under-18 division champions.

Chris Dorst shared coaching duties with the 18-under team but was alone for the Open Women’s team. Clark was in the water, acting like a coach all the same.

The SoPen 18-under boys’ team also reached the championship match before falling, 6-5, to Team BC (British Columbia) in a match that featured three direct shot goals in the finals 21 seconds of play.

SoPen opened with a 12-1 victory over Honolulu and followed that with a 16-1 win over Boopacalypse.

The NorCal Open women’s team started its championship run with a one-goal victory while the Under-18 team completed its championship run in a shootout.

It was an international tournament, with teams from Australia, New Zealand and Brazil, among other countries, participating.

With tournament MVP Lindsay Dorst, a Sacred Heart Prep grad, and player-coach Clark leading the way, NorCal’s Open team survived a tough 8-7 victory over an Australian Country team.

It got a little easier afterward. Wins over Anuenue Hibiscus, 16-4, Anuenue Pikake, 8-3, and the Olympic Club, 7-3, completed bracket play. In the final, the Open team beat Anuenue Pikake, 7-2.

Sacred Heart Prep grads Adriana Vogt and Christie Clark each scored 10 goals to lead the team in scoring.

Other team members included Nicole Barker, Menlo-Atherton grad Hannah Breen, Sacred Heart Prep grad KK Clark, M-A’s Emily Dorst, Rebecca Dorst and Vanessa Lane, Rachel Henry, SHP’s Mary Jayne Mordell and Heather Smith, Menlo School grad Brittany Westerman and Audrey Pratt.

Several played for both NorCal teams.

The 18-and-under NorCal team broke out of the gates with an 18-0 victory over Leilehua and followed that with a 6-4 win over Hawaiian Islands, an 11-3 decision over Xtreme, and an 8-2 triumph over Balmain (Australia).

The Menlo School-based SoPen team played in a 16-team division, which also included teams from Brazil and Canada.

The team was comprised of 11 local players: Chris Akin, Luke Carrino, Jack Finch, Jack Foley, Nick Hale and goalies Jacob Dorn and Keegan Williams from Menlo, recent Menlo grad Ryan Martin, who is going on to play at LMU, Atherton’s Grant Villeneuve from Deerfield Academy, Kielan Crow from Portola Valley, who will be playing at Johns Hopkins in the fall and Bobby Abbott, a senior at Palo Alto.

SoPen’s match was close against Honolulu in the first half but then steadily pulled away for a 12-1 win.

The Boopacolypse Club team is mostly comprised with players from Beverly Hills High School. The game was never in doubt.

A team breakfast at the famous Rainbow Drive-In in Waikiki nearly turned into a team nightmare as five players came down with either food poisoning, or a strange intestinal virus that lingered for the rest of the tournament.

In the quarterfinals, with several of the infected players resting, SoPen got by Punahou School Club, 8-5.

The semifinal was against a familiar rival, the Soquel Club team. SoPen was still playing with some sick players, but were able to prevail, 8-5.

Club BC outscored its opponents by an average of 10-4 entering the finals. SoPen tied the game in the last minute on a great outside shot.

Club BC countered with a phenomenal upper corner shot off an outside foul with 21 seconds left. SoPen then brought the crowd to its feet with an equally impressive outside shot off of a foul with 4 seconds left.

The Canadians called a timeout, ran one last play and sent another upper corner rocket in for the win as time expired.
