Heroin suspect charged with four felonies

Adan Alfonso Romero of East Palo Alto was arrested Tuesday in connection with $7 million worth of heroin

Adan Alfonso Romero of East Palo Alto has been charged with four felony counts after agents from the State Bureau of Narcotic Enforcement arrested him and seized 70 pounds of heroin from his Lincoln Town Car on Sacramento Street in East Palo Alto Tuesday. It was the largest heroin bust in San Mateo County history, according to the state Office of the Attorney General.

Romero was charged with possession for sale, transportation and sale or distribution of a controlled substance, as well as possession of a false compartment for storing a controlled substance, according to Amy Cornell, spokesperson for the District Attorney's Office.

Romero's bail was set at $5 million. He is a Mexican national with ties to the violent Sacramento Street Gang in East Palo Alto, according to the Attorney General's Office.

The trial is to be held in Santa Clara County instead of San Mateo County as Romero committed several heroin-related crimes in Santa Clara County, Cornell said.

"During the course of investigations, we found that some of the acts took place in Santa Clara County," Cornell said. "After discussion between the two counties, we decided to have the trial in Santa Clara County."
