Sharon Ofek, assistant principal at Jane Lathrop Stanford Middle School, will become principal of the school July 1, the Palo Alto school district announced Wednesday.
Ofek will replace JLS principal Don Cox, who will retire June 30.
Ofek began teaching in 1993 as a math and science teacher in the Ravenswood City School District, which serves East Palo Alto and East Menlo Park. She came to Palo Alto in 1999 as a math teacher and served as instructional supervisor for the Jordan Middle School math department before being named an assistant principal at Jordan in 2003. At the start of this school year, Ofek moved to JLS as an assistant principal.
Ofek earned a bachelor's degree in chemistry from Simmons College and a teaching credential from San Jose State University. She earned her administrative credential through Santa Clara University and was awarded a master's degree in Administration Education in 2004.
"I am extremely pleased that she made such a positive impression on the school community and received the unanimous recommendation of the interview committee," school superintendent Kevin Skelly said. "I know she will do a great job."
Longtime Palo Alto principal Sandra Pearson, who served as interim principal of Jordan last year, said "Sharon Ofek is one of the top assistant principals I have worked with. I am very happy that she is being recommended for this position."
Skelly will formally recommend Ofek to the board of education on April 28.
