Had Stanford University been its own country at the Beijing Olympics it would rank 19th best in the world in medals won by present or former Stanford athletes.
Current and former Cardinal athletes in 11 sports gathered medals in 13 events, for a total of 24 bronze, silver or gold medals.
Hypothetically, Stanford's Athletics Department can claim bragging rights over 69 nations that received at least one medal.
Stanford grads won five gold medals in Men's volleyball (Kevin Hansen, Gabe Gardner); Women's soccer (Rachel Buehler, Nicole Barnhart); Rowing (Adam Kreek); Men's swimming (Ben Wildman-Tobriner); and Women's beach volleyball (Kerri Walsh).
Cardinal affiliates took home five silver medals in Men's water polo (Tony Azevedo, Peter Hudnut, Layne Beaubien, Peter Varellas); Women's water polo (Brenda Villa, Alison Gregorka, Jessica Steffens); Softball (Jessica Mendoza, Lauren Lappin, coach John Rittman); Women's volleyball (Logan Tom, Ogonna Nanamani); and Women's swimming (Julia Smit).
Three bronze medals were awarded to Stanford products in Women's swimming (Smit); Men's tennis (Bob Bryan, Mike Bryan); and Baseball (John Gall).
The 24 medals set a Stanford record.
