Seven Palo Alto churches will display anti-torture banners as part of a nationwide effort during Torture Awareness Month in June. The effort is called "Banners Across America."
The seven churches are St. Thomas Aquinas, Our Lady of the Rosary, St. Albert the Great, First Presbyterian, First United Methodist, First Congregational and Unitarian Universalist.
More than 275 churches are participating throughout the country, including 14 in Santa Clara County, according to the Rev. Diana Gibson of Palo Alto.
Prayers and sermons will focus on the "deeply moral and religious concerns" regarding torture, Gibson said.
June was selected for the effort because the United Nations Convention Against Torture went into effect on June 26, 1987. The United States signed the agreement in 1988.
