A man was arrested late Saturday morning after he tried to evade Palo Alto police twice, once when he sped away in a car and the second time when he ran away after crashing his car, Palo Alto Police Agent Dan Ryan said.
Jose Samaniego, 41, a Mexican citizen, was wanted on a parole violation and was not supposed to be in California as a condition of his parole on a sex offense, Ryan said. He is in custody on multiple charges, with an immigration hold.
The first chase started at 10:56 a.m. when an officer noticed Samaniego and two other men in a car parked at a closed auto shop at Fabian Way and Charleston Road.
When the officer approached the car, Samaniego sped off to San Antonio Road then turned north onto Middlefield Road with officers in pursuit, Ryan said.
Samaniego crashed his car at Middlefield and Charleston roads and ran away. He was caught two blocks away by an officer and a police dog, Ryan said.
Samaniego now faces charges of evading police, hit and run, lying to police about his identity and resisting arrest. In addition, the federal government has an immigration hold on him, which means he will be deported after serving any additional prison time, Ryan said.
The two men with Samaniego were released without any charges.
