Mercury, Daily News pulling out of Palo Alto

Two news organizations to occupy separate floors of building in eastern Menlo Park

Both the San Jose Mercury and the Palo Alto Daily News are pulling out of Palo Alto to move into consolidated offices in a multi-story building on Constitution Drive in eastern Menlo Park.

The Mercury’s bureau on University Avenue in downtown Palo Alto has already closed, and the Palo Alto Daily News offices on High Street will soon close, according to reports. Both are owned by MediaNews.

Mercury reporters and editors from the bureau are either working out of their homes or traveling to the Mercury’s main offices in San Jose.

The two staffs will not be that consolidated, however: They will reportedly occupy separate floors, after some Mercury staff members objected to working with Daily News reporters, who are not represented by the Newspaper Guild, a professional union that represents journalists.
