Ready for Nothing

Uploaded: May 31, 2020

The end of the school year is tiring regardless of whether it is distance learning or in person. But I think many parents and kids are ready for this school year to be over.

With so many online classes and meetings, our kids are ready for a break. Originally I was excited that they could still connect with teachers and friends throughout the week, but I’m also very ready for a break from all of the screen time.

When distance learning started I made a deal with our kids. We didn’t start school work until it was clear to me that they were ready for a break from playing. Whether they were wandering around looking for something to do, arguing with each other, or just ready to see what their teachers planned for the day.

However, almost every day we did pause their playtime together for various virtual meetings for school and classes. Unlike their other school work, those couldn’t be delayed.

Sometimes these classes were well worth the interruption and sometimes they were underwhelming. We may not have a typical summer, but I’m looking forward to a break from these sessions. Although places are starting to open up again, I’m looking forward to days where we have nothing scheduled.

One of my favorite memories from the last 2 months was playing the guitar while the kids and I all sang songs together. I was learning my first 3 chords and made many mistakes, but I greatly enjoyed hearing my kids join in and start singing along with me.

As a parent I crave these unplanned moments together. The last 2 months have brought a roller coaster of emotions, but they’ve also opened up some free time for us to spend together. I don’t know what summer will bring, but I’m looking forward to more mornings with nothing on our calendar.
