Giving old hobbies new lifeUploaded: May 11, 2020
Growing up, I enjoyed playing the flute and the piccolo. I stopped in college, but try to play a little bit for our kids every year. I enjoyed playing lullabies when they were babies, nursery rhymes when they were toddlers and Disney songs when they were a bit older. Every Christmas I try to take out my flute at least once to play Christmas songs. Sometimes I’m surprised I still remember the notes and other times I’m surprised how rusty I sound.
When we realized we would be staying home for a significant amount of time, we started brainstorming different hobbies we could learn or improve. I decided to bring music back into my life. I’m learning Let It Go and other Disney songs on my flute. I’m practicing using two hands on our keyboard. And I finally bought a guitar and a ukulele. While I love playing the flute and piccolo, I always wanted to learn how to play an instrument where I could play and sing at the same time.
I don’t expect to become an expert at any of these instruments, but it’s been a lot of fun to learn a couple of songs on each to play for our kids. They don’t care if I play a bit out of tune, very slowly, or accidentally hit the wrong notes. They like singing familiar songs with me and I love sharing my love of music with them.
What old hobbies are you giving new life while at home?
