Alice Waters is coming to Palo Alto. And no, it’s not to open a restaurant. (Wishful thinking.)

The Chez Panisse owner and California cuisine pioneer will be at upscale retail store Shinola, of all places, to give a reading on Thursday, March 3. Shinola, a Detroit-born company, is having Waters at its new downtown Palo Alto location to celebrate the installation of "One Grand."

One Grand is a bookstore in Narrowsburg, New York, where all the books have been chosen by authors, artists, actresses and other creative minds in response to the question, "If you were stranded on a desert island, which ten books could you not do without?" (Read more about One Grand in this New York Times Magazine piece, A Bookshop Where Everything is Recommended.)

Shinola has an ongoing partnership with One Grand at select stores, which otherwise sell luxury watches, leather goods and bicycles, a Shinola representative said. The curated bookstores provide customers with "a window into the minds of some of the world’s most engaging people," an event description reads.

Waters shared her top 10 reading picks with T Magazine in 2015. (They included "The French Menu Cookbook," "Fast Food Nation: The Dark Side of the All-American Meal" and "And the Pursuit of Happiness" by Maira Kalman, among others.)

Shinola said they don’t know what Waters will be reading from next week.

The Palo Alto event will run from 4:30-6:30 p.m. at Shinola Palo Alto, 261 Hamilton Ave. To RSVP email RSVP_PA@shinola.com.
