Enjoying the snow from afar

Uploaded: Jan 24, 2016
With the blizzard on the East Coast, our son is hearing all about snow this week.

We've talked about which distant friends and relatives are affected by the blizzard and which are nowhere near it. We've looked at Facebook posts, YouTube videos and news stories related to the blizzard. And, not surprisingly, we ended up talking most about how the blizzard has severely impacted transportation.

It's not always easy to find current events that are appropriate to discuss with a preschooler. But I enjoy working them into our conversations whenever I can.

My 2 year old and I discuss income equality, climate change, ISIS, Donald Trump and of course the lack of diversity in Hollywood.

Babytalk- It is a challenge to find age appropriate topics sometimes.

It was impossible for us to discuss snow with our toddlers until they could experience it for themselves. The one thing I wasn't expecting was just how excited they were for their first experience and went straight out and then came straight back in because snow is so cold. Even after bravely going back out, the little fingers had to feel and touch the snow to understand it but the cold was the main discussion topic even though the temperatures weren't that cold at the time. For our Californian kids, even when they were mid elementary age for their first experience of snow, it was the cold they weren't prepared for and remembered more than anything else.

As for discussion topics, we always find they bring up wonderful topics themselves. Reading to them always starts discussions even with favorite books.

Rainy days are the days we play board games, bake together, play dress up, and generally let them invent their own rainy day activities. Do get out each day for letting off some steam. Wearing boots, stomping in puddles, playing Pooh sticks with small twigs, collecting rainwater in sand toy buckets then using scoops and sieves, are all worth doing outside.

Mother of 4 - Thank you for sharing! Yes, I'm curious how our son will react the next time he plays in the snow, it's been a long time. Books definitely spark many conversations in our home too. Great for both rainy and sunny days.

@cherly, funny thing is that the 2 year old brings up those topics. Oh kids today!
