STANFORD HEALTH FAIR . . . A free health fair by the Stanford Prevention Research Center will be held on Sat., Sept. 15 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Hoover Pavilion, 211 Quarry Road, across the street from the multilevel parking structure of Stanford Shopping Center. The event offers free screenings for cholesterol levels, blood glucose and blood sugar, with immediate results. Attendees can undergo a computerized analysis to assess their level of risk for a host of health conditions or learn about classes and health studies. The fair features informative lectures, doctors, health educators, nutritionists and alternative-health practitioners. Registration isn't necessary, but those who want to be tested at a specific time can register by calling 650-725-3080 or by e-mailing vmonti@stanford.edu. AT YOUR ARTHRITIC FINGERTIPS . . . Arthritis sufferers with an Internet connection can benefit from 20 years of research at Stanford. Researchers have developed an online course to help sufferers manage pain, disability, stress and fatigue that accompanies the disease. Healthier Living with Arthritis is a six-week online course through Foothill Community College in Los Altos Hills. Anyone with any form of arthritis may join. Foothill registration fees and a permission form signed by a doctor are required. The fee is $54.50. Register at foothillarthritis.stanford.edu. HEART TREATMENT ALTERNATIVES . . . Nontraditional methods for treating heart disease often appear in the media. Palo Alto Medical Foundation Cardiologist Bob Hu, M.D., will discuss the alternative ways to treat heart disease currently in the news. DON'T SWEAT IT . . . Palo Alto Medical Foundation will offer the popular Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction class on Sept. 24 and 25 from 6:30 to 9 p.m. The program teaches effective reduction of physical and emotional stress through breath, medication and gentle yoga. RHYTHM OF AUTUMN . . . The Peninsula Stroke Association's benefit, Rhythm of Autumn, will take place Oct. 7 from 5 to 8 p.m. at Community School of Music & Arts. The event includes a strolling supper, wine, auction and music and benefits the free programs and services offered by the association for stroke survivors and their families. The event honors primary stroke centers in the area. Mezzo-soprano Jan Curtis, a nationally known opera singer and stroke survivor, will perform.
