BACKYARD COMPOST ... A free workshop on how to make backyard compost, offered through the Recycling and Waste Reduction Commission of Santa Clara County in conjunction with City of Palo Alto Utilities, will be held from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, April 28, at the Mountain View Community Center Auditorium, 201 S. FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY ... Yannette Fichou Edwards will teach a class on "Meals the Whole Family Will Enjoy" from 6:30 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, May 1, in Room 103, Palo Alto High School, 50 Embarcadero Road, Palo Alto. Meals include handmade calzone stuffed with pepperoni and olives for the kids, ricotta, spinach and mushrooms for the adults; Asian sesame beef, lemon-grass chicken on skewers; and chocolate chip cake. MIXED-USE LANDSCAPE ... PERFECT DAHLIA ... Mimi Clarke will teach a class on "Growing the Perfect Dahlia" from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 9, at Filoli, 86 Canada Road, Woodside. Participants will learn how to pot and plant Dahlia tubers and will go home with a Filoli Dahlia to plant at home. Cost is $50 for nonmembers, $40 for members.
