ORCHID SHOW ... The Peninsula Orchid Society will hold its annual show and sale from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 28 and 29, at the Community Activities Building, 1400 Roosevelt Ave., Redwood City. Admission to the show, which includes presentations and demonstrations as well as nine vendors and members selling plants, is $5 for adults, $3 for seniors, disabled and children from ages 12 to 16. EDIBLE LANDSCAPING ... Diane Ott Whealy, co-founder of Seed Savers Exchange, will teach a class on "Edible Landscaping With Heirlooms" from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 28, at Common Ground Education Center, 559 College Ave., Palo Alto. ZIPPER FLOWERS ... Dorothy Yuki and Monica Lee will offer a workshop on "Zipper Flowers" from 1 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 29, at the FabMo Workshop Annex, 2423 Old Middlefield Way, Mountain View. The workshop will show how to make flowers out of zippers, to be used as brooches, hair pins, jewelry and other embellishments. Bring your own scissors. Nancy Welch will teach how to turn Fabmo fabric into "Heartfelt Containers, Boxes, & Cornucopias" from 1 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 4. Cost is $35 for each class. CHOCOLATE, YUM ... Cindy Roberts will teach a class on "Valentine's Chocolate," with emphasis on making the perfect brownie, a warm lava cake and a heart-shaped espresso chocolate cake, from 6:30 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 2. The class meets in Room 103 of Palo Alto High School, 50 Embarcadero Road, Palo Alto. Cost is $50, which includes taste-testing bar chocolate and further sampling. TOYS, COATS GO OVER BIG ... Ten Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage offices on the Peninsula collected 710 toys and 340 coats for the annual Toys for Tots and Operation: One Warm Coat drives over the holidays. Top collectors were the Palo Alto Downtown and Midtown offices, according to a statement.

ALL ABOUT ROSES ... UC Master Gardeners will give a free workshop, "All About Roses," from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 31, at the Los Altos Library, 13 S. San Antonio Road, Los Altos. Focus will be on general rose care and pruning, with a demonstration of bare-root planting.
