NEED NEW DETECTORS ... As of July 1, California requires all single-family homes to install carbon-monoxide detectors, designed to warn people of malfunctioning home appliances that can produce deadly amounts of gas. However, the law can only be enforced if emergency personnel are called into a home and note the lack of a carbon-monoxide detector. The resident will be given a warning and a 30-day window to install a detector or face a $200 fine. Cost of new detectors range from $20 to $42 (for smoke/carbon monoxide combos).
