Beatrice Kavinoky

Beatrice Kavinkoy, 90, a resident of Palo Alto, died Feb. 17, 2011, at home with her family at her side.

Bee, as she was known to family and friends, was born in San Bernardino and grew up in Pasadena, Calif. She was a graduate of Whittier College and taught elementary school during WWII. She met her future husband, Bob Kavinoky, at a Halloween dance. They were married April 2, 1942. In September she celebrated her 90th birthday party with more than 100 people in attendance.

She lived in College Terrace in Palo Alto from 1950 onward. She was active with scouts, AAUW, Friendly Visiting and the Wesley Pantry. She led church camps and was a lay leader with the Methodist Church. She loved swimming, gardening, walking, and being with her family.

She is survived by her husband of 68 years, Bob Kavinoky, and her three children and their spouses: Larry and Sue Kavinoky of Palo Alto, Rick and Sue Kavinoky of Santa Rosa, and Karen and Chris de Vos of Lake Tahoe. She is also survived by eight grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, March 19, at Wesley Methodist Church, 470 Cambridge Ave., Palo Alto. In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made in her memory to VITAS Hospice Organization.

Margaret West Arnold

Margaret West Arnold, a long-time resident and former First Lady of Palo Alto, died March 1, 2011, after suffering a stroke.

Born Aug. 18, 1916, in Live Oak, Fla., she graduated from Florida State College for Women with a degree in home economics. Remembered by family members for her credo, "pass it on," she helped to fund her siblings' educations. She met her husband Edward Arnold, future mayor of Palo Alto, on a weekend trip to Princeton, N.J, from her home in New York City.

She moved to Palo Alto in 1950 and was active in community work. She founded "Camp Friendship," a 20-year-event which gave underprivileged girls from East Palo Alto a chance to attend a camp run by older Girl Scouts counselors. She also started the Covenant Presbyterian Church branch of the Palo Alto Food Closet and ran a workshop at Avenidas. Her hobbies included creating arts and crafts and conducting genealogical research.

She is survived her husband of 68 years, Edward Arnold; daughter Nancy and son-in-law Ross Weinstein of Seattle; daughter Martha Alstor of Detroit; daughter Heidi Arnold of Moutain View; and son James Arnold and daughter-in-law Lisa of San Diego; and two grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, March 5, at Covenant Presbyterian Church, of which she and her husband were founding members. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Avenidas or Covenant Presbyterian.
