BEYOND TULIPS ... UC Master Gardeners will offer a free workshop, "Beyond Tulips: Bulbs for Beauty and Food," on Saturday, Oct. 2, from 10 to 11 a.m. at the Palo Alto Demonstration Garden, 851 Center Drive, Palo Alto. The gardeners will focus on bulbs that thrive in this Mediterranean climate, including garlic, onions and shallots. PLANT SALE ... Gamble Garden will hold its annual Plant Sale on Sunday, Oct. 3, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 1431 Waverley St., Palo Alto. The free Community Day will offer children's activities, garden demonstrations, horticultural resources and displays, food and entertainment. NO MORE CHAOS ... Christine Palen, who consults, coaches and teaches classes on priorities and productivity, will teach a class called "Organize Your Office: From Chaos to Control" on Tuesday, Oct. 5, from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at Palo Alto High School, Room 305, 50 Embarcadero Road, Palo Alto. The class will deal with creating simple paper-flow systems, streamlining e-mails and productivity tools. Fee is $35, plus a $5 materials fee payable to the instructor. VERTICAL GARDENING ... The fee ($125 for nonmembers, $105 for members) includes a redwood frame, succulent potting mix, succulent plants and instruction on plant selection, design and maintenance of a vertical garden. BACKYARD CHICKENS ... Jody Main, garden writer and educator, will teach a class on raising "Backyard Chickens" on Saturday, Oct. 9, from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The class covers hen house and yard set-up, nesting boxes, caring for hens and chicks and crops to grow to feed them. The class meets at Common Ground, 559 College Ave., Palo Alto, and then carpools to Main's garden and hen house in Woodside. Cost is $39 plus $7 materials fee.
