CLARIFICATION ... Fees and discounts at Palo Alto's community gardens have changed as of July 1, 2010. The new cost is 40 cents a square foot. Current gardeners with fee reductions will keep those until they expire, according to Catherine Bourquin, garden program coordinator. The new rules offer fee reductions to students 17 and under, disabled people and seniors. Information: 650-496-5980 or catherine.bourquin@cityofpaloalto.org.

FABMO GIVEAWAY ... FabMo will be giving away fabrics and more on Friday, Aug. 20, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturday, Aug. 21, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the FabMo Creativity Center, 2423 Old Middlefield Way, Mountain View. Everyone is welcome, but access is by appointment only (e-mail gather.fabrix@me.com). Volunteers are needed to help sort the goods (e-mail help.fabrix@me.com). A special sale of donated items, including glass table tops, tile assemblies, chandeliers and furniture, is set for Wednesday, Aug. 25, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Information: fabrix@fabmo.org.

WORMS EAT GARBAGE ... "Let Worms Eat Your Garbage" is the name of the next Gardening from the Ground Up workshop, to be held on Saturday, Aug. 21, from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at Palo Alto Art Center Auditorium, 1313 Newell Road, Palo Alto. Palo Alto residents will be eligible for a voucher to buy a reduced-cost Biostack™ compost bin after attending the workshop. The fee is $20, which includes a Bay-Friendly Gardening book. GARDEN KNOW-HOW ... David Kirby of Monrovia Nursery will be the speaker at the next meeting of the Garden Club of Los Altos, to be held Tuesday, Aug. 24, at 1:30 p.m. at Christ Episcopal Church, 1040 Border Road, Los Altos. Information: 650-964-7614.

GROWING ALLIUMS ... UCCE Master Gardener Sue Zaslaw will offer a free talk on how to grow edible alliums — bulbing onions, garlic and shallots — on Tuesday, Aug. 24, from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Los Altos Library, 13 S. San Antonio Road, Los Altos. Topics range from preparing the soil, to planting, harvesting and preserving alliums. INDIAN COOKING ... Wish you could whip out Chicken Tikka Masala, Saag Paneer or other Indian goodies? Meena Bhasin will teach a series of seven classes called "Indian Cooking Made Simple" on Wednesdays, Aug. 25 through Oct. 6, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Burgess Recreation Center, 700 Alma St., Menlo Park. Two dishes will be prepared in each class, and recipes will be provided.
