NATIONAL COACH . . . Menlo Park's John Hubbell has been named a United States Tennis Association national coach by USTA Director of Coaching Tom Gullickson. Hubbell, now an independent teaching pro, was the men's coach at San Jose State from 1980-97 and served as coach for the USTA Junior Davis Cup men's team from 1981-88. Hubbell is one of 12 USTA National Coaches being hired under the new USTA Tennis Player Development program. As a USTA Junior Davis Cup coach, Hubbell worked with players like Stanford grad Patrick McEnroe, Jay Berger, Richey Reneberg and Rick Leach.
STANFORD ROUNDUP . . . The opening game of a three-game baseball series between Stanford and Cal-State Fullerton has been pushed back to Saturday in Sunken Diamond at 1 p.m. Game 2 is scheduled for Sunday at 1 p.m. with the final game set for Monday at 2 p.m. If Saturday's game is rained out, a doubleheader may be scheduled Sunday or Monday . . . The top-ranked Stanford women's swim team will put its undefeated dual-meet record on the line Saturday at noon against No. 13 Texas in deGuerre Pool . . . Stanford junior Joel Kribel captured individual honors at the PING Arizona Intercollegiate played on the par-71, 6,882-yard Raven Golf Course in Tucson, Ariz. Kribel maintained the lead he took into the final round by firing a career-best 6-under-par 65. He finished the tournament with a career-best 13-under-par 200. Kribel's 54-hole total ties the tournament record and gives him his first tourney title of the season and fifth of his career. Stanford finished ninth in the team race, 30 strokes behind champion UNLV.
SOCCER NOTES . . . CYSA Girls Undeer-14 tryouts for the fall of 1998 will be held Sunday, Feb. 22 and March 1. Girls must be born on or after Aug. 1, 1984 and have had previous competitive soccer experienc e. Interested players should contact Ruedi Graf at 592-0757 or Larry Aufmuth at 324-5384 . . . Tryouts for the CYSA Pelicans, an Under-13 Girls' Class I team and member of the Palo Alto Soccer Club, will begin Feb. 21 from 9-11:30 a.m. at El Camino Park. Other tryouts at El Camino are Feb. 22 (4-6 p.m.), Feb. 23 (4:30-6 p.m.) and Feb. 24 (4:30-6 p.m.). Parents should accompany players and bring a birth certificate . . . Positions are open on the Portola Valley Flash, an Under-17 Girls' Class I CYSA team that placed second in the 1997 District Cup. Tryouts for goalkeeper and four field positions will begin in March. LOCAL BASKETBALL . . . Many of the top young female basketbal players on the Peninsula will take part in the Fifth Annual PALO Club 8th Grade Invitational Basketball Tournament, beginning this weekend at Palo Alto High. The 16-team field includes Jordan Middle School, which will open play Saturday at 8:30 a.m. in the Paly girls' gym. Second-round games begin at 1:30 p.m., with the championshp game set for Sunday in the Paly boys' gym at 3:30 p.m. The tournament is co-sponsored by SANCRA and City of Palo Alto Recreation.
