Stormy weather, poor road conditions, flooding cancel numerous games

by Keith Peters

The recent stormy weather did a lot more than wash out most of the high school soccer action this week, it also forced postponement of at least six basketball games. The Menlo School girls' basketball game at St. Ignatius on Tuesday was cancelled. So, too, was Castilleja's basketball game at ICA, the Pinewood boys' and girls' games with Valley Christian-Dublin, the Sacred Heart Prep boys' basketball game at Redwood Christian and the Eastside Prep girls' basketball game at Mountain View Academy.

Also postponed was a wrestling match between Aragon and host Menlo-Atherton.

"We just decided, for safety reasons, it was wise to reschedule," said Christy Eustice, athletic director at Pinewood. Road conditions across the Bay prevented the Valley Christian-Dublin boys from reaching Pinewood. Those same reasons, plus the fact a number of players couldn't get to Pinewood because of flooding in Palo Alto, forced posponement of the girls' game in Fremont.

Similar reasons prevented the Sacred Heart Prep boys from traveling across the Dumbarton Bridge to Fremont to face Redwood Christian. That, and the fact some SHP players were stuck at home because of local flooding.

"We've got one player from La Honda (which suffered major flooding)," said Dawn Hemm, an assistant athletic director at Sacred Heart. "He's still not here."

Said Castilleja AD Nancy Martin: "We have so many kids commuting from San Jose and the East Bay. They couldn't get on a highway to get here."
