Sports ShortsHOOP SIGNINGS . . . Taking it to the next level are Stanford seniors Naomi Mulitauaopele, Heather Owen and Vanessa Nygaard, all of whom are headed into the professional ranks next season. There will, however, be a parting of the ways. Mulitauaopele and Owen are headed for the American Basketball League while Nygaard has signed with the rival Women's National Basketball Association. Mulitauaopele and Owen accepted invitations this week to the ABL's player combine next week in San Francisco. Mulitauaopele, who had one year of basketball eligibility remaining at Stanford after redshirting this past season due to a knee injury, will bypass that extra year in order to pursue a pro career. Nygaard, who will join former teammate Olympia Scott in the WNBA, will sit out the 1998 season while rehabilitating a torn anterior cruciate ligament in her left knee. She will be eligible for the upcoming draft.
DIAMOND NOTES . . . Stanford sophomore outfielder John Gall of Portola Valley has been added to the USA Baseball National Team roster, joining Cardinal teammate, pitcher Justin Wayne. Gall is one of 40 invitees to the team's summer training camp. There, the players will be evaluated and the roster trimmed to 22 in preparation for the International Baseball Association's World Championships in Italy.
GYMNASTICS CHAMP . . . Palo Alto's Nicole Przybyla may be only 10 years of age, but she's quite advanced in the sport of gymnastics. The Walter Hays School student, who competes for Airborne Gym in Santa Clara, captured three individual events and all-around honors at the Cal State Level 7 Gymnastics Championships recently at Cal State Sacramento. Przybyla won the bars, beam and floor exercise on her way to capturing all-around honors.
